A Reflection on business growth after retirement
Embarking on the path of entrepreneurship often involves strategic decisions. The insightful journey of Sharron Jones, the owner of Cleaning Crew of Capitol Hill, LLC, started in March 2009. Sharron transitioned from retirement to become a successful business owner in the cleaning industry, in order to earn additional income after retiring. Her commitment to excellence quickly garnered a strong reputation, leading to the expansion of the business with eight employees and the publishing of a book.
Why did you choose to become a business owner?
I wanted to earn extra income after I retired. I started working for close friends and family. My goal was to do the best job I could so that my customers would spread the word to their family and friends. A high demand for my services was needed so I employed three other employees to help me and we have been growing ever since. As I share in my book, we were raised never to let someone discourage us in our path and choices, which I think is the secret to a successful business.
How did you start your business?
My son owns a janitorial company and my two daughters own a maid service. This is essentially how our journey commenced. Encouraged by their support, I ventured into the industry on my own terms. I received my EIN, created a catchy business name, and applied with the corporation, unemployment, and tax offices. I signed up with the Small Business Administration (SBA) and my neighborhood business association so that they could mentor me.
Can you share a bit about your book?
In 2016, I released a book to share my experiences and provide support for individuals embarking on their entrepreneurial journey in the cleaning industry. Geared towards those in the early stages of starting a cleaning business, the book offers concise instructions, straightforward recommendations, operational insights related to clients, proposals, and valuable cleaning tips.
“As I share in my book, we were raised never to let someone discourage us in our path and choices, and my business is really a success.”
What is your business focus?
We started by providing maid services and later were trained to clean carpets/upholstery, powerwash, strip, buff, and wax floors. We also have experience with event cleanings, and cleaning post-construction/ renovation properties–the company performed after-construction cleaning for the new MGM hotel. Adapting to market demands, we also undertook Airbnb turnovers. Presently, our objective is to increase our involvement in-office cleanings.
Is there a specific skill that would have helped you when you were first starting out?
I wish I would have known more about writing proposals.
Do you have any support in the business community?
Joining my neighborhood business corporation and SBA has been beneficial. When I don’t know something they can always keep me on point.
What advice would you give to your past self before opening your own business?
I wish that I had started it at a younger age and did more research about proposal and grant writing.
